As you may already know, it’s important to clean your retainer regularly. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. However, this might be a difficult task if you’re not sure how to clean the appliance and keep it in tip-top shape. So, to help you, our orthodontist, Dr. Ryan D. Sparks, has some cleaning instructions for you.
It’s important to clean your retainer when it’s still wet, which means you need to clean it right when you take it out of the mouth. This is recommended because if you wait to clean it, plaque and other debris can harden on the appliance, making it very difficult to remove the substances and completely clean the retainer. So, when you take the appliance out of your mouth, pop it in a cup of retainer or denture cleaner.
If you notice plaque building up on your retainer, which is a white, sticky film, then you need to manually clean it with your soft-bristled toothbrush. If you wish to use another tool, you can clean it with a denture brush or with a vegetable brush. As you scrub it, use mild dish soap or water. Do not use toothpaste because the paste can scratch the appliance.
If you follow these instructions, your retainer should remain in top-notch condition.
